chris wiesendanger

Pianist and Composer. Born in Zürich, lives and works there.

In his numerous projects he develops forms on the interface of composition and improvisation. The focus of his work is on theme fields as silence and action, gestures, movement, presence, energy, posture and concentration.

His work is strongly connected with his long time studies of jazz and the jazztradition, contemporary composition, rockmusic, electronic music, musique concrète and traditional Japanese music.

At the center of Chris Wiesendanger`s music stands concentration and presence. Out from this silent center polyphonic and polyrhythmic structures are developped, superpositions of motion are in contrast with emptiness and open space. The music unfolds, resonates, changes and returns to silence.

His working groups are a trio in Tokyo with japanese bass player Tetsu Saito and saxophonist Taiichi Kamimura. The trio is enlarged with japanese traditional instruments.

Since 2012 he works in trio with Frank Möbus (guitar) and Gerry Hemingway (drums).

In 2015 he recorded an album in trio with the american musicians Ben Street (bass) and Jeff Ballard (drums). The new CD "Au clair soleil, je chante à pleine voix" will be released in summer 2016.

Since long time Chris Wiesendanger plays Piano Solo Concerts. The CD "Acoustic Solo Piano Works Vol.1" was released in 2015.

As a composer of contemporary concert pieces he writes music for chamber ensembles, soloinstruments and songs. In 2012  premiere of his song cycle "Wie ein Band aufrollen und ins Feuer werfen" (based on medieval japanese Tanka and Haiku texts) with the Ensemble für Neue Musik Zürich, the singer Sonoe Kato and bass player Christian Weber.

Chris Wiesendanger teaches at the Zurich University of Arts ZHDK and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts HSLU. His long time teaching experience is an important aspect of his musical work. Questioning the "teaching of improvisation" and explorations on "practising" have a direct influence on his work.
